ABOUT THE HARDCARD

It’s possible you’re embarking on your first year of study at UC. Good choice. You could be back for another. Or possibly you’ve decided to come back after a Tiger Woods style indefinite break from study where you did much staring into the distance and found your true calling; probably at the bottom of a cheap vodka or packet of durries.

Whatever category you roll in, goddammit you’ve promised yourself to be the most best-est most conscientious-estest student walking campus!

You’ll limit your drinking to sensible levels. Go to every lecture + tutorial you’re awake for. In between times you’ll hang out at the library and only surface after the sun has gone sleepy-byes. You'll budget properly…the list continues.

For some the above may actually eventuate cos mummy and daddy have threatened to cut off the allowance for real this time if matters don't improve. For the rest, I give it two weeks before the old routine is back. But dreams are, and always will be, free and that’s just choice cos students lap up free stuff.

Not everything’s free though. Students are aware of this and happily settle for stuff which is cheaper than the same stuff non-students (and non-seniors) have to pay more for. “Student discounts” for short.

Students also tend to lap up laziness and can’t really be bothered finding these “student discounts” - cuts into crucial Gossip Girl or Entourage watching you see.

Launching in 2010 your HardCard is not another piece of plastic masquerading as something useful. Rather, it is actually something useful. Using your HardCard at participating businesses will save you cash. It will help you live up to the promise you made when you chose to study…to live life on the cheap!

So don’t just smoosh your HardCard in between your maxed-out credit card and drivers licence with a photo that doesn’t look remotely like you anymore.
